Maybe a U turn for us next year.
Posted By fallen_angel on Sunday, September 26 2004 at 5:07 PM
With the buzz surrounding the radio release of U2’s new single Vertigo last week, many fans are waiting on official news of a U2 tour next year. (As we’ve already revealed, it’s likely the band will visit Australia in December next year).
But the main architect behind the design of U2’s stages hows is also working with Australian singer Darren Hayes. Peter “Willie” Williams is planning Hayes’ tour in Britain and the United States, plus dates scheduled for Australia in February.
Williams told S he was hoping Hayes’ performances would reflect the notion of an “anti-tour”, with stripped-down settings, intimate seating and close-up access to the singer himself.
The first glimpse of this stage design could be seen during the Sydney Showcase when he performed inside a club in Kings Cross in front of an old television set, a table lamp and a couple of musicians, including producer Robert Conley. Hayes even played the keyboards himself, gleefully performing a note-perfect version of his soulful track Feel.
Judging by the strength of his voice and the biting delivery on tracks including I Forgive You and Darkness, Hayes is in fine form for a full-scale tour in February.
Any pop fans who haven’t bought his album The Tension And The Spark should make the trip to the local record store – it’s worth it.

Darren's 'The Tension And The Spark' Debuts Top Ten
Posted By lssilver on Saturday, September 25 2004 at 1:14 PM
Following his promo blitz of the nation last week that included knockout album launches in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney, Darren Hayes lit up the charts this week, with his new album 'The Tension And The Spark' scoring a #8 debut in the ARIA Top 50!
Following his week-long blitz of Australian media and TV last week, pop sensation Darren Hayes has rocketed into the charts with his new studio album 'The Tension And The Spark', scoring a #8 debut in the ARIA Top 50!! Besides appearances on Rove, The Footy Show and Channel [V], Darren whipped lucky fans into a frenzy with a series of secret intimate performances in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane to launch the album, leaving punters floored and little doubt that Mr Hayes is one of the finest pop singer/songwriters this country can lay claim to.
Currently on his way back to his temporary homebase of London where he's gearing up for a series of UK concert dates throughout October and November, Oz fans who missed out on catching Darren perform live this time around can expect to see him back in the country early next year for a full national tour - we'll keep you posted!!
And some excellent news on Darren's next single - it's now confirmed that 'Darkness' will be the second single released from 'The Tension And The Spark' and the very worthy follow-up to the electro-clash smash of 'Pop!ular', which debuted at #3 on the Oz charts. Expect to see the single in stores everywhere late October with a bevvy of cool B-sides for your listening pleasure!!
"Opener 'Darkness' lays bare the hints of the albums title - cold beats warmed by Hayes' voice and open lyrics. If 'The Tension And The Spark' is his 'Ray Of Light' (it is), 'Darkness' is his 'Frozen'." The Hearld Sun Hit, four out of five stars - 'The Tension And The Spark'
'The Tension And The Spark' out now
The new single 'Darkness' out October

Sydney Showcase
Plan B Nightclub
Friday September 17, 2004
The night started off at 6.45pm when the doors to the club opened. Once inside the fans gathered around the stage area and talked among each other until the show started around 8.30pm. The venue was packed with plenty of celebrities from the Australian music, tv and radio industry.
Darren opened with a perfect rendition of Darkness, showing that he really is a first class performing artist. Following Darkness was I Like The Way which when peformed live was absolutely amazing, and just made you want to get up and dance. Darren showed off his vocal range during the next two songs (Dublin Sky and Unlovable). Popular was next and the girls right in front of Darren got a good dose of pelvic thrusting that was ever so close to their faces.
After this Darren sat down at the keyboard to perform feel by himself. No mistakes were made. It was a memorable moment for Darren. To close the performance Darren performed I Forgive You. This involved some of the lowest vocals I have ever heard performed by Darren. Overall an absolutely amazing performance.
After the performance we waited while Tracey from the D-Zine arranged for the fans to have a meet-and-greet with Darren. Although it was a short affair we had photos taken with Darren and we all congratulated him on the performance and new album. A great experience.

New Journal Entry from Darren
Posted By lssilver on Monday, September 20 2004 at 10:14 AM
19th September 2004 - Darren's new journal update.
Well it's been a long time since I've written in my journal...so much has been happening I don't even know where to start.
I'll just start from right here, right now. I'm sitting in my hotel room in Sydney Australia looking out on the most beautiful day on the harbor. Every time I come home I find myself wondering why I don't live here!! I keep telling myself it's only temporary that I live elsewhere and that one day soon I'll come home for good.
I'm so pleased that the record is finally on the shelves. This is truly a labor of love for me this time and it's unexpected but wonderful to see that people seem to be connecting with the music and what I have to say.
I had an great time in Melbourne for the first album launch performance, Sydney was fantastic and now it's just on to my home town of Brisbane for one final launch performance before heading off to L.A to shoot the video for 'Darkness'.
Thanks to all of you who have come out to show support.
I love you and I can't wait to tour this baby.
Until next time.
Be well.
Love and light
Darren

Darren Hayes: I have many
Darren Hayes: you know theories and thoughts about life
Darren Hayes: if I had to boil down to one concept it would be karma
Darren Hayes: i try really hard to understand the flow of negative and positive in life
Darren Hayes: you can choose to see the gift and some see the curse
Darren Hayes: thats the short answer to what I believe about life
Moderator:
Darren Hayes: Umm...
Darren Hayes: you know Id really love to be involved in film production in some ways
Darren Hayes: be behind the scenes instead of the performer
Darren Hayes: I get to see so much because of what I do now
Darren Hayes: to me its really creative jobs, dont really involve always being the centre of attention that would be fun
Darren Hayes: I can never see myself being a teacher again but wouldnt mind a degree to put next to my gold records
Darren Hayes: that would be fun
Moderator:
Darren Hayes: I got bored
Darren Hayes: I moved on to Piano
Darren Hayes: I used to play guitar really badly
Darren Hayes: but now I play Piano badly
Darren Hayes: I know enough just to write my songs
Darren Hayes: I use instrument as a basic tool - I usually let others play them on stage and on my records.
Moderator:
Darren Hayes: I would never say never to all of those things
Darren Hayes: short answer no immediate plans but Delta is a good friend of mine and we've definately experimented in the studio together
Darren Hayes: who knows what comes of it

Moderator:
Darren Hayes: I wanna go to Israel
Darren Hayes: would love to go to Israel - always been fascinated with the biblical history

Darren Hayes: request my song, play my video - maybe you'll hear me on the radio
Moderator: This is often asked of singers, do you listen to your own CDs? lol
Darren Hayes: I definately listen to this one
Darren Hayes: first album I ever really played a lot I can almost disconnect myself from it
Darren Hayes: Its very magical
Moderator: Is the cover art for TTATS an inside joke, or are we supposed to get
Moderator: some meaning from it?
Darren Hayes: Theres definately no joke
Darren Hayes: a very heart felt serios record
Darren Hayes: the art and shoot is all related
Darren Hayes: and meant to tell a story
Darren Hayes: usually videos, shoots and all that is used as a gratifying ego of an artist and making the artist look like an attractive product, I wanted to come across as a story teller, I wanted it to be as interesting and intriguing as the music so thats the point.
Moderator:
Darren Hayes: Look as I said befoer
Darren Hayes: Id love to
Darren Hayes: Canada was always a success for some strange reason never worked for my first solo album.. you're cruising for a bruisin, Hayesy is gonna come and stalk you lol
Moderator:
Darren Hayes: Umm
Darren Hayes: I love Australia
Darren Hayes: I am just lucky that my job lets me live in other countries
Darren Hayes: its a wonderful experience, gave me a broader view of the world
Darren Hayes: I am sure one day I would love to come back permanantly to australia
Darren Hayes: in fact I am here while I speak to you
Darren Hayes: Ive always wanted to be a singer - never been a question
Darren Hayes: Never knew it could be a career when I was 5 and when I was like 17 or 18 I knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life
Moderator:
Darren Hayes: Yes
Darren Hayes: It wasnt a decision not to use it but it was a decision to use other ranges of my voice
Darren Hayes: lower keys, more full body vocal performances
Darren Hayes: I think that was in keeping the vibe and instyle of the record - it talks about depth, darkness and I think that the voice needed to reflect that.
Moderator:
Darren Hayes: When you grow up you can be anything you want
Moderator:
Darren Hayes: Singing with Pavaroti was similatinously entertaining and terrifyingh
Darren Hayes: he is a very classicaly trained singer and I was completely opposite, over last three or four year I only just started singing lessons so it was one big compliment that he liked my voice and he had a lot of faith in me... I loved the experience it was wonderful.. Yoga calms me down makes me listen tomy heart and my inner voice a little more that I do in my day to day life.. so its like a meditation thing for me with yoga
Moderator:
Darren Hayes: Be careful what you wish for
Darren Hayes: you just might get it!
Moderator:
Darren Hayes: Different people
Moderator:
Darren Hayes: I dont think its about endorsing a product
Darren Hayes: I think its about getting paid to make music
Darren Hayes: so if someone wants to use my songs to sell something then go for it
Darren Hayes: At the end of the day its hard to sell music cause people aren't buying cds much anymore, like I did in the popular video to get my music heard.
Moderator:
Darren Hayes: hmmm
Darren Hayes: Hello Emily
Darren Hayes: let me clarify something about the us now ive got your attention
Darren Hayes: definately releasing the album next year and every other territory - dont worry if its not there yet, just concentrating on one half of the world yet
Darren Hayes: Yes its happening next year, Screenwriting course loved it and amazing....
Darren Hayes: with the screenplays was being done at the same time of writing this record so it was all quite personal, relationship based, heavy, and dark - and no titles as yet. No idea if I am going to actually make them, just a fun process to go through.
Moderator: <|MiDnIgHt|> Hey Darren Just Wondering What Your Plans For The Future are like are you gonna continue with music or settle down
Darren Hayes: continue making music this is part 1 of a 2 part process
Moderator:
Darren Hayes: Ill be touring the album then get back in the studio - in process of moving to New York City
Darren Hayes: and want to get into musicals
Darren Hayes: do a play and then reinvent myself again :)
Moderator: Unfortunately we have to wrap things up but thanks Darren for taking the time to chat with us this afternoon and good luck with the album and look forward to hearing a lot more from you :)
Darren Hayes: Can I say a big thankyou for everyone who waited around and chatted with me today - I have really enjoyed it... and I love everybody and appreciate your support and hope I get to see you in person very soon!
Darren Hayes: Big Love
Darren Hayes: D
Darren Hayes: xx
Moderator: Thank you Darren :)

With a barrage of interviews and press lined-up over the following week, fans should make sure they're tuned into the following special television appearances!
Following his co-hosting stunt on Channel [V]'s 'WhatUWant', Darren is set to hit the hotseat on Rove [Live] tonight for an interview (Channel Ten from 9.30pm), followed by a live-to-air performance of his wicked new single 'Pop!ular' on the AFL Footy Show, this Thursday (Channel Nine, from 10.45pm). 'The Tension And The Spark' has already been recieving glowing reviews around the globe and for good reason. Stepping into brave new territory with producers Mark 'Spike' Stent (Björk, Massive Attack, Depeche Mode, Madonna), Marius De Vries (Björk, Madonna's Ray Of Light, The Moulin Rouge) and hardcore underground electronic maverick Robert Conley, Darren has emerged with a mesmerising and gritty collection of atmostpheric, electro-pop tracks that you're not going to be able to resist shaking your booty to - if you loved the first single 'Pop!ular', just wait until you hear the rest of this baby!! The new Darren Hayes is well and truly on fire...just check out this review from the Sun Herald to get the picture.
The Week's Most Talked About Release
"Before speaking to Hayes about the making of this new CD, I listened to a pre-release copy of his album, on my own, with no preconceptions. I won't forget those gooesbumps in a hurry. This music heralds a bold return for Hayes...for two main resons: the pop songs are captivating (and well structured) and Hayes has dared to be a little dirtier.
Amid the sexy mirth of singles including 'Popular', there is a self-conscious, depressed mood in tracks such as 'Darkness' and 'Feel'. 'Dublin Sky', a song written by Hayes, is pure Savage Garden. But listeners will be surprised by other tracks including 'I Forgive You', with it's electro-feel and Hayes's voice effortlessly shifting from a deep, raunchy intro to the falsetto lyric of "I feel sooo high"....for pop lovers, this album is a genuine treat." Christine Sams 9/10, The Sun Herald

He may have decamped to the US but international pop sensation always has his homeland at heart!! Fans can look forward to a mega-helping of all things Darren Hayes this week, when the one and only Mr Pop!ular jets into Australia this Friday for a stack of promo appearances, media showcases and interviews in support of his brilliant new album 'The Tension And The Spark', in stores next Monday.
Darren hits the Rove [Live] hotseat next Tuesday, September 14 for a not-to-be-missed interview (Channel 10, 9.30pm) as well as performing live on the AFL Footy show Thursday, September 16 (Channel Nine, 10.45pm) and making an appearance with Kyle Sandilands from the luxury surrounds of a yacht on Darling Harbour on Friday September 17 at 6.00pm for the brand new MTV-TRL show (broadcast simultaneously on the austereo network nationally). And be sure to check out interviews on MTV, VH1, Video Hits, So Fresh, Channel [V], Nova, Mix FM, Today Tonight, Sunrise, Today Show and plenty more as well!
With a career spanning eight-years and with 23 million albums sold, Darren has matured and evolved as a potent songwriter on 'The Tension and The Spark' - the follow up to his 2002 debut solo album 'Spin'. Described by The Observer as "lyrically breathtaking and musically brilliant" and as "a bubbling sonic platter of songs," by Closer Mag, 'The Tension And The Spark' is a more honest and autobiographical album that sees Darren taking brave risks, both lyrically and musically, for an innovative and atmospheric electronica soundscape that's going to blow your mind.
Produced, written and mixed by a combination of Darren, Mark 'Spike' Stent (Björk, Massive Attack, Depeche Mode, Madonna), Marius De Vries (Björk, Madonna's Ray Of Light, The Moulin Rouge) and hardcore underground electronic maverick Robert Conley, 'The Tension And The Spark' features the so, SO cool first single 'Pop!ular' that debuted at #3 on the ARIA Top 50 Singles chart and features a Jack-ass conceived video, filmed off the cuff on the streets of London. And if you're loving the track, then make sure you get the album into your hot little hands come Monday, because it's just the tip of the iceberg!!

Savage need for film role
By Christine Sams
September 7, 2004
The Sun-Herald
Darren Hayes may be gearing up for the release of his new solo album, but the singer has revealed his film ambitions.
Hayes has auditioned for a leading role in a film musical in London. While he won't reveal the name of the movie, he has declared: "I wanted to get this part so badly.
"I've never been in a film before, but it is a musical I really love."
The singer attended auditions in London alongside a host of hopeful actors, and is yet to hear whether he's been successful. But even when he was a teenager in suburban Brisbane, he had his eye on an acting career.
"I'd won a scholarship at school to a drama course and was always in school musicals and the choir, you know, the star performer," he told the Sun-Herald, with a laugh. "When I sang, people just stopped and listened. I was going to be this performer, but I had my guidance counsellor talk me out of it and my family talk me out of it. They said, 'You're too smart, you're too intelligent. You can do that one day, but you need to be a doctor or a lawyer or whatever.' "
Needless to say, a music career won out in the end, after Hayes spent five years at university (studying journalism, then teaching). He scored a record deal with his Savage Garden bandmate Daniel Jones in the final semester at the Queensland University of Technology and quit the course before finishing his degree. For the record, he'd still love the piece of paper.
"I never finished. I'm still one semester away from having a bachelor of education. If they're reading this, I'd love them to give it to me, I want my degree. I did five years of university and I have nothing to show for it," he said.
Of course, singing remains Hayes's greatest passion, but he hasn't ruled out pursuing an acting career if he is awarded the film role.
The 32-year-old singer will be back in Australia on Friday to promote the new material from The Tension And The Spark. He'll visit Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.
His new album was released in Britain on Monday, and he hopes his pop experimentation will strike a chord with British audiences.

Review of the G-A-Y Performance
Posted By lssilver on Sunday, September 5 2004 at 12:55 PM
From Raj Rudolph ...Darren's show tonite at G-A-Y was brilliant. He played the following songs with a four piece band and dancers;
I Like The Way
I Want You
Insatiable
Popular
Affirmation
Unlovable
Crush (The Holiday Mix)
A couple of highlights - before Crush, Darren did Madonna's upside down yoga walk and told the audience 'If Madonna can do it, so can I' and towards the end of the Crush, he incorporated the chorus to Popular in it.
